چکیده

The need for firearm identification systems by police services continues to increase with greater accessibility to weapons in the national and international contexts. The difficulties associated with traditional imaging of ballistics specimens are numerous, and include the smallness of the samples, the nature of the surfaces and shapes for the cartridge cases and projectiles. The “mechanical fingerprint” on fired bullets and cartridge cases can be used to identify the firearm that they passed through. A PC based firearm identification system, Fireball, has been developed at Edith Cowan University and used by police ballistics sections in Australia. This paper will give a brief description of this system and details of the image processing such as segmentation, feature extraction and image processing before saving images to the image database. Examples will be given to demonstrate the methodology.

Ballistics Image Processing and Analysis for Firearm Identification

The identification of firearms from forensic ballistics specimens is an exacting and intensive activity performed by specialists with extensive experience. The introduction of imaging technology to assist the identification process of firearms has enhanced the ability of forensic ballisticians to conduct analyses of these specimens for identification. The positive identification of ballistics s...

Identification of selected monogeneans using image processing, artificial neural network and K-nearest neighbor

Abstract Over the last two decades, improvements in developing computational tools made significant contributions to the classification of biological specimens` images to their correspondence species. These days, identification of biological species is much easier for taxonomist and even non-taxonomists due to the development of automated computer techniques and systems.  In this study, we d...

Features Extraction and Classification of Cartridge Images for Ballistics Identification

Ballistics identification is a quite challenging task from both theoretical and practical point of view. The premise underlying firearms and toolmark identification is that each firearm owns its unique toolmarks, resulting in some unique characteristic markings left on the fired projectile and cartridge case. Although various techniques have been applied to firearm identification, the major pro...

Proposed “NIST Ballistics Identification System (NBIS)” Based on 3D Topography Measurements on Correlation Cells*

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has proposed a “NIST Ballistics Identification System (NBIS)” to facilitate accurate ballistics identifications and fast evidence searches [1]. The NBIS will use three-dimensional (3D) topography measurements for ballistics identification and evidence searches. The 3D topographies will be subdivided into arrays of correlation cells in or...

Some Forensic Aspects of Ballistic Imaging

Analysis of ballistics evidence (spent cartridge casings and bullets) has been a staple of forensic criminal investigation for almost a century. Computer-assisted databases of images of ballistics evidence have been used since the mid-1980s to help search for potential matches between pieces of evidence. In this article, we draw on the 2008 National Research Council Report Ballistic Imaging to ...
